The name “East Point” derives from the fact that this is the terminus of the Atlanta & West Point Railroad in the east; West Point Georgia is the terminus where the rail line ends in the west. This settlement was founded as a railroad terminus with 16 families in 1870, but quickly became an inviting place for the industry to develop. The City of East Point was chartered in 1887 and is comprised of an ethnically diverse community. Between 2010 and 2014, the overall population grew by 5.3%. With over 38,000 residents and more than 17,000 households, it’s the sixth-largest city in Fulton County.
East Point is a quaint and ethnically diverse urban community that offers the full amenities of in-town living. The Historic Downtown District is surrounded by several residential communities including the Lofts of East Point. During the year, a number of downtown festivals take place, including The Taste of East Point, Destination East Point Fall Festival, and the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration. East Point has the only Velodrome in the world that includes green space and creek running through the in-field. The 1/5 of a mile and 36 degrees banked concrete track for bicycle racing is located in the tranquil and historic Sumner Park. The Fort McPherson/Tyler Perry movie studio complex is expected to give the city a boost in population, jobs, and housing. With over a million square feet of commercial and retail space, the Camp Creek Marketplace features 100 shops, boutiques, restaurants, hotels, and special attractions. As of the census of 2000, there were 39,595 people, 14,553 households, and 9,430 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,878.9 people per square mile (1,111.8/km²). There were 15,637 housing units at an average density of 1,137.0 per square mile (439.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.16% African American, 16.10% White, 0.20% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 3.40% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.57% of the population. There were 14,553 households there in 2000, out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.7% were married couples living together, 28.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.27. In the city, the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $31,874, and the median income for a family was $36,099. Males had a median income of $27,114 versus $25,839 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,175. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.0% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.
